The Anacostia Rowing Course features some of the best water in the Mid-Atlantic region.

General Information:

  • Make sure that you have personal identification (such as a driver's license). If you park in the Washington Navy Yard, you'll need to show your ID.
  • Please prepare yourself for any possible weather conditions. Dress to stay warm and dry, for there is little shelter beyond that which is needed for emergencies. If the forecast is hot, bring plenty of water as it is not readily available.
  • Plan ahead for food and drinks. McDonald's will befrom 8 am to late afternoon. It is located in the Navy Yard, one block from the parking lot. Many people like to bring their own food and drinks. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
  • The launch dock and volunteer check-in are on the downtown side of the Anacostia River, next to the Washington Navy Yard. The finish line and spectator area are on the opposite bank, in Anacostia Park which is part of the National Park system.

Directions:

Spectators, follow directions to the viewing areas in Anacostia Park.  Competitors, Officials, and Volunteers, follow directions to the Navy Yard and Regatta HQ.

To get onto the SE/SW Freeway heading East:

  • From the direction of the National Mall and the Monuments: Follow Independence Avenue past the Tidal Basin as it bears right toward Maine Ave. Keep in the left lane, and take the ramp up to the SE/SW Freeway (I-395).
  • From I-395 in Arlington / Alexandria: Proceed north on 395 toward DC which becomes the SE/SW Freeway.

Instructions for Spectators:

Spectators may not watch from the very congested launch area, nor the bridges. Where you want to be is the viewing area where the view is spectacular.

Proceed past the 6th St. SE exit to the I-295 exit, following the Martin Luther King, Jr. signs. This carries you across the 11th St. bridge. As you cross the bridge, stay in the second lane from the left, which will be marked with an overhead sign to Anacostia Park. This lane will exit to the right and take you down a short ramp to a stop sign. At the stop sign turn right onto Good Hope Road for one short block to the road along the river. This is Anacostia Drive. Turn right to the Finish Line (about 1000 meters) or left to the Starting Line (500 meters) There is ample parking along the street and in the lots across the street from the river.

Returning from the viewing area

Turn around and return to the Good Hope Road entrance to the park where you entered. Turn onto Good hope Road and proceed through the traffic light at MLK Avenue, bearing left with Good Hope Road At the next traffic light, 13th St., SE, turn left and you will be at the ramp onto the 11th St bridge.

If you wish to drive to the Regatta HQ and launch area from here, you may cross the bridge, take the Navy Yard exit to the right, turn left into N St. SE partway down that exit ramp and turn left onto 11th St to O St. SE where the Anacostia Community Rowing Center is located.

Instructions for Competitors, Regatta Staff, Officials AND Volunteers:

The Washington Navy Yard has kindly agreed totheir parking facilities to us for cars, trailers and buses. The following directions will get you to parking in the Navy Yard and then Regatta Headquarters;

Proceeding east on the SE/SW Freeway, as soon as you have passed the South Capitol Street exit, cross over into the far right lane and take the next exit - 6th St., SE/Navy Yard. The exit becomes Virginia Avenue, SE, which crosses the numbered streets on a diagonal. Turn right on 8th St. SE, proceed two blocks and turn left on M St., SE. Enter the main Navy Yard gate, go straight to O St, SE, turn left and go one block to 10th St, SE.

  • CARS: Park in the parking structure at the corner of 10th and O.
  • BUSES: Turn right on 10th St, and park in thelot (the Dental Clinic Lot) on the left. Please park in the blue-lined slots next to the Dental Clinic building.

Reach the race site by walking east one block on O St, SE, exiting the Navy Yard at 11th St, and proceeding a short distance to the sign saying "Anacostia Community Rowing Center" on the right. Follow the footpath to the river and the docks and Regatta Headquarters.

Instructions for TRAILERS:

Please note: Parking is not permitted on O St, you must go to the Navy Yard.

Exit the SE/SW Freeway at 6th St. SE/Navy Yard as for cars. Turn right on 7th St., SE proceed two blocks to M St. SE, turn left. Follow M St. east, past the Navy Yard, through the light at 11th St. and continue straight ahead. This will look like the end of the line, just a dirt road, but don’t despair. Approximately one-half mile past 11th you will pass a semi-abandoned petroleum tank (the old Steuert Petroleum) and then see a right turn at an acute angle. There are no trees or other obstacles to turning. We will place a sign to help you identify it. Take this right turn and follow this now narrow dirt and pavement road. On your left will be yacht clubs and the River. Then you sill see the 11th St bridge ahead. The street you are on is O St or Water St, SE, and the Navy Yard’s O St gate is directly ahead. Enter the Navy yard through the O St., gate, proceed one block to 10th St., SE, turn left on 10th and left into theparking lot next to the Dental Clinic.

We suggest trailers park away from the building toward the river to provide ample room for unloading and rigging. However, be aware that crews must carry their shells from the trailer parking area to the dock for most events, as there is very little temporary space for shells in the launch area itself.
